Toting fishing poles and long green worms, a small group of Denton middle school students participated in a special fishing expedition Wednesday morning at South Lakes Park.

The Denton school district’s Adapted Physical Education Department, part of the district’s special education department, planned the “Learn to Fish — Fish for Life” program after receiving a nearly $1,000 grant from the Denton Public School Foundation.

Involving the life skills and social adjustment classes from Strickland and McMath middle schools, educators used the program to teach students about angling and the aquatic environment.

“There’s nothing like really catching a fish,” said Strickland special education teacher Lynette Friedemann.

(Mar. 15, 2007 - Denison, TX)... When a fog delay chopped fishing time in half on Thursday, the first day of the Lake Texoma Bassmaster Central Open, anglers Matt Hupp and Clark Reehm used the short day to their advantage.

Hupp of Gainesville, Texas, brought in 19 pounds, 4 ounces of bass for the Day 1 lead at the Texoma event, the first Central Open of the 2007 season. Russellville, Ark., pro Reehm had 17-1 for second place.

Fishing with Hupp on Lake Bob Sandlin

Every spring I like to fish with a variety of fishermen who are skilled in the art of bass fishing. Some of these fishermen are older and have spent years developing their skills. Others are young and just beginning to hone their skills. It’s sometimes surprising how fast these young men become proficient with locating and catching bass.

One young angler I met a few years ago while he was working at the Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine is Matt Hupp. We’ve only fished together a couple of times, but we’ve always caught fish.

SOUTHLAKE -- Professional bass angler Matt Hupp drives a boat, not a race car, but from all the logos on his shirt, one might think he is a NASCAR star.

When Hupp visited with students Thursday in Carroll Senior High School's outdoor-education classes, some students said they were surprised that he could reel in so many sponsors to help finance his trips to tournaments and to supply his equipment.
